Thanksgiving, Christmas, the holiday season... Why does homeschooling during this time equal stress for many of us? Why can't homeschooling be fun and stress-free during the holiday season? It took me years, but I did figure out how to reduce the homeschool stress.
I can do it. Every year I say that I will shop early, make gifts during the summer, plan ahead, and then I can relax, enjoy the season and not be a stressed homeschool mom. Well..... sad to say, I just graduated my youngest from homeschool this last spring and I never shopped early, made gifts ahead of time or planned ahead enough! But I was still able to make homeschool fun and stress-free during my homeschool years.
The “school” we did during this time was through crafts, cooking, baking, shopping, and reading! And yes, when I could I had to do the homeschool mom thing and add a little math as well.
Because there is so much for a mom to do during this time, I completely stopped formal teaching right before Thanksgiving There are typically three weeks between the end of the Thanksgiving weekend and a few days before Christmas. During the time I would do a couple of hours of school in the morning at the most. Some years, we just stopped any type of school altogether! And yes, even without doing any school during the month of December some of our homeschool years, my children all graduated from high school, went on to college and are amazing adults!
If this season is also the most difficult and stressful time of year for you, give yourself a break. Try something different. My solution may not be the best for your family. It may be just as stressful. But whatever you do, make sure it is something that is simply easy and enjoyable for the whole family. This is so much better than having a breakdown and crying in the bathroom. (I know from experience!) Enjoy the season. Learn and laugh with your family
I would love to share with you my Legends of Christmas Family Study with Activities- a family exploration of the season's traditions has been created to give your family a unique study opportunity to learn about the history revolving around Christmas and the many things used to celebrate it today. This resource was designed to be used with children of all ages.
This fun Christmas product includes coloring pages, writing prompts, activities, discussion questions, and Scripture suggestions to help discuss the history of what's addressed as well as raise awareness of how these can relate to Christmas today, especially pointing to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
